Cloud Computing - the future of software delivery
The Old Days
Many of us can remember the days when software arrived in a huge box with 8 to 10 floppy disks and a 2" thick manual! You needed yards of shelf space to store all the manuals and the floppy disks would inevitably get lost. Then followed CD's with slimmer manuals. Today we would expect to do no more than download the software online, and maybe order a CD for peace of mind. I have not heard anyone bemoaning the passing of the floppy disk - indeed it is hard to find a PC with a floppy drive anymore.
We have no doubt that the future of software is online with access via a browser. At this stage in the development of the market, it is particularly suitable for the SME community, which officially comprises businesses with an annual turnover of less than £3 million. Many of these will no longer have to go to the expense of buying and running their own server with all the attendant hassle that this often involves.
For larger firms with a huge existing investment and complex industry specific requirements, the migration process might take a little longer but we feel sure it will happen in time. For start up businesses it is a real no-brainer. Having all your software online you can immediately enjoy the benefits of being able to access anything, anytime, any place, anywhere - I think there's an old Martini advert in there somewhere!
Cloud Computing
The concept of cloud computing or SaaS (Software as a Service) as it is also known, has been around for some time but has only become of age since broadband speeds made it possible. It was essential that the user experience online was comparable to an in-house system before the market could take-off. Speed is everything - we can no longer tolerate hanging around waiting for things to download. How different from only 10 years ago!
Designing an accounting package which also incorporates order processing, stock control and payroll is no mean achievement. To do it with an attractive, intuitive and customisable interface is even more of a challenge. We believe we have such a product and we also think it offers the best value for money on the market.
Platform Independent
The humble browser is actually an amazing piece of software. And it's totally free with no annoying adverts or in-your-face flashing bits. It is also exactly the same user experience whether you use a PC or an Apple Mac. We admit to being Apple Mac fans here but the beauty of using software on the cloud via your browser is that it eliminates all compatibility issues. You can have a mixture of PC's & Macs in you office or at home and when you use your accounts software the interface will be exactly the same.
Browser based software, online software or Software as a Service (SaaS) are all ways of describing the same thing. Essentially the cloud acts as your server, with the internet allowing multiple users to access the same information simultaneously with record locking to prevent two people amending a record at the same time. The principle is very sound if you think about it - get leading edge technology and share it with 1000's of customers, saving them the cost of having to buy and implement their own solution.
